In 1992,the first ever elections, under the new fourth Republican constitution, the opposition party, the New Patriotic Party, boycotted the parliamentary polls after Jerry Rawlings had won the elections over Professor Emeritus Albert Adu Boahen. Prof Boahen garnered 30.40% of the valid votes cast. The party later nicknamed that victory of Jerry Rawlings, of blessed memory as the “STOLEN VERDICT”

The running mate of Professor Adu Boahen, then was our own northerner, the distinguished Lawyer Roland Issifu Alhassan ( R.I. ALHASSAN). He was one of the torch bearers of the UP TRADITION.

In 1996, there was a “merger” between CPP and NPP, that merger was code named the GREAT ALLIANCE! This resulted into the Npp departing from the convention in 1992 and picked Dr. Koh Nkensen Arkaah as the running mate to the NPP flagbearer, the PEERLESS John Agyekum Kuffour. That bid never saw light at the end of the tunnel. John Kuffour lost to Jerry Rawlings.

The next election in 2000, Alhaji Aliu Mahama, the humble and soft spoken pride of the north, partnered with JAK and delivered the presidency. Some say it was sheer luck, but I disagree ( Will tell you why in my subsequent write up).

The 2004 election saw a repeat of the JAK-Aliu Mahama ticket. Victory was once more, bagged by the then ruling NPP government.

The NDC in the previous two election, prior to 2008, had two northerners as their running mate, but never saw victory in those two elections. It was in 2008 election, which delivered the presidency for the first time, with the South-North ticket for the NDC.It was John Dramani Mahama who was then a legislator for the Bole-Bamboi constituency.

In that same year election, a relatively unknown Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the political landscape of Ghana, was chosen by the then Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the party for the 2008 election.

The New Patriotic Party lost that election in 2008 and subsequently, in 2012 with same Dr. Mahamudu.

It is worth noting, that, whilst Alhaji Aliu Mahama was an astute Civil Engineer(Contractor) and a well established businessman, prior to his running mateship in 2000, the unblemished Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was a deputy Governor of the bank of Ghana. He rose through the lower ranks to the governorship position.

Alhaji Aliu Mahama (RIP) then, had a huge SOCIAL CAPITAL and a financier of the NPP, as well as the bank roller of Real Tamale United football Club, together with others.

Alhaji Aliu Mahama, haven ruled Ghana as Vice President for eight years with his boss, the PEERLESS JAK, his bid to lead the party was cut short in the year 2007 at the Legon Congress. It was evidently clear JAK never supported Aliu Mahama. He supported, Alan Kyeremantin at the expense of his VEEP. Some political watchers say it was this and many other factors, that led to the defeat of the NPP in the 2008 election.

Soon after the 2012 election defeat and the subsequent election petition loss, the NPP hit the ground to galvanised the support base for the 2016 elections. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for the third time running was once again chosen to run with Nana Addo.

I can emphatically say, without any shred of doubt, that, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, was the pivot of the electoral victory of the NPP. Some say he singlehandedly, WON the elections for the NPP in the 2016 election.

To consolidate the win of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu was again the running mate of the President in the 2020 election. He once more, together with the party delivered the presidency to the party.

In about two years from now, the NPP party will go for flag bearer contest. The rumour mill has it that, Alan Kojo Kyeremanten, will be contesting. Joe Ghartey, the legislator from the West has indicated same. The rest shall be known to Ghanaians, as time wore on!

Our own Dr. Bawumia, without any doubt, shall be contesting. I urge the party and it’s delegates to do the needful, by endorsing Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for 2024 national election.

The Alhaji Aliu Mahama mistake shall not be repeated. If it does happen, our story shall be told to our future generation, how we failed one of our own, who suffered and toiled for the NPP! Posterity shall judge us all, and fierce and brave battle he, Dr. Bawumia fought to give the NPP a victory shall be his witness.

Twice he failed in this battle (2008 & 2012). But he fought hard and fought well.
Twice he has won a victory (2016 & 2020).

A vote against him, shall cement the long held perception that, the NPP is an AKAN BASED PARTY.

He deserve to be the flag bearer!
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia MUST lead NPP for 2024 elections.
