Executive Director of the Institute of Democratic Governance (IDEG), Dr Emmanuel Akwetey has posited rather bizarrely that former President Mahama is destroying his international reputation following his decision to reject the flawed 2020 presidential result.

Has president Mahama not warned beforehand that he’ll not accept the result of a flawed election? Was president Mahama forced to accept the result of the 2016 election as incumbent? Are flawed elections meant to be accepted? What reputation is Dr Akwetey talking about?

To start with, I will like to put on record that Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey is an appointee of President Akufo Addo. He is part of the 13-member Advisory Board of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration set up by President Akufo Addo – so, don’t by distressed by his preconceptions.

Beyond that, he was part of the recent Presidential Elections Peace Pact (PEPP) convened by the Office of the National Chief Imam, the National Peace Council and the National House of Chiefs – consequently, he is very much aware that anything other than a peaceful election ought to be jettisoned by all parties according to the pact, but look at what he is saying?

Now, we all saw what transpired during the just ended elections. There were massive vote padding, over voting, shooting, killings, irregularities, violence etc. Has Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey condemned the mayhen that characterized the elections? The answer is no! Why is he not worried about his own reputation as a convener of the peace pact? Or his own reputation is not important to him?

Has Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey advised Jean Mensah to do the right thing? Is he not bothered about the international image of Ghana’s Electoral Commission? Has he advised Akufo Addo (the beneficiary of the electoral fraud and violence) to reject the outcome of the 2020 presidential election result in order to protect his international reputation? Or Akufo Addo’s international image is not as important to Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey as that of Mahama?

Has Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey advised the 22-member Eminent Advisory Committee of the Electoral Commission chaired by former CHRAJ boss, Justice Emile Short and assisted by Gifty Affenyi Dadzie, a former President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) with members such as Arch Bishop Nicholas Duncan Williams, Arch Bishop Palmer-Buckle, Dr. Eric Oduro Osae, Dr. Rose Mensah Kutin, Dr. Yaw Baah and Maulvi Mohammed Bin Sali among others to tell the EC to do the right thing for their reputation to remain intact? Has he done that? Why not?

The 2020 election was marred with shooting of unarmed civilians – many have been severely injured with about six (6) people dead. The election was fraught with serious electoral irregularities across the country, but Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey is not worried about Ghana’s democratic credentials – all he want is for Mahama to concede defeat so Akufo Addo can rule.

Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey found nothing wrong with President Akufo Addo who deployed soldiers, policemen and party vigilante hoodlums to shoot and kill NDC members at various collation centers across the country, but he found everything wrong with president Mahama who has rejected the outcome of a flawed election – a move that’s in accordance with the peace pact that Dr Akwetey supervised.

What kind of hypocrisy is this?
