The immediate past member of parliament (MP) for Kumbungu constituency, Ras Mubarak has lost in his bid to represent the northern region as member of the council of state.
Mr. Ras had zero (0) out of thirty two (32) votes, while his three contenders ; former CEO of Stanbic Bank, Chief Alhassan Andani polled eight (8) votes, Mr. Mohammed Abdul Rashid – one (1) vote with Chief Col. Mahamoud Tahiru polling twenty three (23) votes to emerge victorious.
The elections were held at the Northern Regional Coordinating Council today, February 12, 2021, which was conducted by the electoral commission.
The winner, Col. Tahiru was “overwhelmed” by the confidence reposed in him by the delegates, saying that, “This is good news for the people of Dagban and northern region.”
According to the outgoing Northern Regional minister, Salifu Saeed, Chief Col. Tahiru coming from a security background will used his almost three (3) decades experience to advise the president on matters of security, adding that the election was “peaceful”.
“The delegates selected a very revered and distinguished military officer in Ghana Armed Forces who went on retirement with his vast experiences he has accumulated. And given the fact that the northern region has succeeded within the first 4 years undr president Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo. One of the problems that was weighing down the progress of development was conflict. And thank God, the Dagban old age conflict was settled”, he said.
“Because of his security background, he will be able, to use to lias and network and facilitate, the view and aspirations of the chiefs of the duty bearers in the region, to see how he can marry it with what the dedicated security agencies headed by the northern regional security council. They will blend their expertise. And that will enhance and empower
appropriately to enable him advise his excellency, the president, when it comes to matters of security”, Mr. Saeed added.
Chief Andani also thanked the winner, and pledged to support him, whenever the need arises, adding that, he was not disappointed by the outcome of the election.
“I will continue to serve the people, so, I’m not disappointed. I keep doing the very best I can do to make a difference. I still have a traditional role to play and my formal work as well”, Chief Alhassan Andani told the media.
