The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Caucus in parliament led by Tamale South Constituency Member of Parliament (MP), Haruna Iddrisu has reacted to the outrage by the party’s grassroots over the members failure to disqualify some ministerial nominees of president Akufo-Addo.

This was contained in a statement signed by the minority leader and copied to all media houses on February 5, 2021, assuring the grassroots that it will not happen again in future.

“The past few days have been the most difficult for the NDC Minorily Caucus in Parliament following the approval of President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo’s nominees for ministerial appointments. Justifiably, the party’s base and grassroots are unhappy and in some instances have had cause to reject and even condemn the decision of the House to approve the three nominees that went through voting. For many, it is unimaginable how they could pass the test in the hands of the same Minority that sccured them a Spcaker of Parlament from an opposite party in tne Executive in tne 7″Jandaly 2021”, the minority statement said.

“The Leadership and entire Parllamentary caucus of the NDC wishes to reiterate our commitment to the cause of the great National Democratic Congress. We expressly reaffirm our resolve to hold the Akufo-Addo government to account over the coming days, months and years for their stewardship to the Ghanaian people. This is non-negotiable. You may he disappointed in this outcome but we will not disappoint or let you down in the future. The caucus has never been and would never be for sale. We categorically deny all allegations or influence or favour as a consideration ror the approvals in lhe House. I
It is inportant to note that we are parlies of equal strenglh with; NDC 137 and NPP 137+1, how we wish we had just 140. We acted in accordance with our oath of office and in good faith and conscience. We hold dearly our founding principles of probity, accountability and social justice in our every engagement on behalr of our Party”, the statement added.

The NDC MPs also used the opportunity to reaffirm their commitment and loyalty to the party, calling on all party supporters not to lose hope in the caucus, as they work to dislodge the New Patriotic Party (NPP) from power in 2024.

“The Caucus remains loyal to our base and wishes to call for restraint and calm. We ask all NDC faithful to have faith in the Caucus leadership as we navigate our path to recapturing the Presidency in 2024. The Caucus would lead the vanguard with the support of our loyal grassroots. May we aways be reminded that the things which bind us as comrades far outweigh whatever may divide us”, the NDC Caucus stated.

“We pray for calm nerves even as leadership at all levels continue fo offer its direction towards our coming victory. Be assured that the Caucus is still the Caurus of the 6/7th January 2021 that achieved the unthinkable feat of electing the Rt. Hon. Alban S.K. Bagbin as Speaker. Let’s keep the faith. May we all be measured in our ulterances as we seek to rise together. God bless the greal NDC”, it concluded.

On Thursday, February 4, three (3) of the ministerial nominees who were rejected by the NDC Caucus at the appointments committee level, were overwhelmingly endorsed with twenty three (23) NDC MPs purported to have voted for the minister-designate for Fisheries, Madam Hawa Koomson, who polled 161 votes out of 265, while eighteen (18) voted for Information Minister designate, Kojo Opong Nkrumah and six (6) voted for Agriculture Minister designate, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto who got 143 votes.

This did not go down well with the NDC’s National Communications Officer, Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi who took to Facebook to lambast the leadership of the NDC Caucus in parliament, alleging that, the minority leader, Haruna Iddrisu and minority chief whip, Muntaka Mubarak “brazenly defied the leadership of the party (NDC) and betrayed the collective good for their selfish interest.”

“And we, must not let them succeed in their parochial quest to destroy the NDC, the party that has done so much for them and all of us. The shame they have brought on the party will forever hang like an albatross around their necks,” he said in a piece on his Facebook page, March 4, 2021.
