The Paramount Chief of the Mion Traditional Area, Mion lana Abdulai Mahamadu has withdrawn from the Dagbon Constitutional Review Committee.
He cited “some anomalies substantial enough to affect the outcome of the review process” as the reasons for his withdrawal.
The revered Paramount Chief who is occupying one of the three gate skins of Dagbon – the others being Savelugu and Karaga expressed disappointment in the absence of a member of the Abudu Royal family in the thematic and advisory committee of the Dagbon Constitutional Review Committee (DCRC).
“Of grave concern was [the] non-involvement of representative from Abudu Royal family in the thematic and advisory committee as was instructed by my father, His Majesty, Ndan Ya-Naa Abukari II.” a statement signed by the Mion lana and addressed to the Chairman of the Dagbon Constitutional Review Committee read.
Mion lana Abdulai was part of the 16 member DCRC reviewing the 1930 Constitution of Dagbon.
The Paramount Chief of Gushegu, Gushe-Naa Shitobu Abdulai, also a member of the DCRC has also withdrawn, citing same reasons.
On October 21, 2021, The Abudu Royal family announced that it was withdrawing from the process over the alleged bias of members of the Dagbon Constitution Review Committee.
The Abudus said members of the Committee-Lawyer Mohammed Mumuni and Lawyer (Rtd) Ibrahim Abass, both from the Andani family seem to be on a trajectory influenced by Ibrahim Mahama- the Andani family’s age long lawyer, to keep Dagbon in perpetual state of anarchy.
“Indeed, the Abudu Royal Family may be right in seeing what is going on as a surreptitious adventure or bite the bullet tactics from two persons under the tutelage of no person other than Ibrahim Mahama whose self-seeking agenda since 1969 has been to keep Dagbon perpetually in a state of anarchy.” the Abudu Royal family told Journalists at a news conference.
