The Northern Regional Chairman of the Ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Chairman Bantima Samba has donated a sum of GHC 10, 000 to the families of the victims drowned in Oti River to assist in the burial arrangements.
Chairman Samba, who was at the Saboba to commiserate with the families of the victims of the unfortunate incident which happened when a canoe capsized on the Oti River, leading to the untimely death of some BECE candidates of the St. Charles Liwanga Junior High School in the Northern Region.
He assured them of government’s support in these trying times, adding that measures are being put in place to address the issue of teachers using students during class hours.
The chairman, mayor of Tamale and other regional executives accompanied the Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Alhassan Saani following the incident.
Meanwhile, Jashain Emmanuel, the Headteacher of the eight Junior High School (JHS) pupils has since been remanded into prison custody.
He was remanded on Monday, November 15, 2021, by a Tamale District Court presided over by Amadu Issifu.
The accused has been charged with manslaughter.
The defence counsel pleaded with the court to grant his client bail, arguing that the accused voluntarily submitted himself to the police hence had no intention to jump bail should he be granted.
The case has been adjourned to November 29, 2021.
