The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has described the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Regional Executives Elections in Northern Region as “a step towards the party’s greatest defeat in 2024”.
In the NDC’s solidarity message by the party’s regional secretary, Mohammed Abdul Salam, he bemoaned the use of excessive money to woo delegates to win elections rather than on merit.
“We are here this morning. To solidarise with the NPP, as they take the greatest step in rocking the boat towards their greatest defeat ever to come in 2024. We have observed and taken judicial notice of a number of things that are happening, which are, for lack of better words which are inimical to the democracy that the founder of NDC, late Jerry John Rawlings brought to us”, he said.
The NDC regional secretary used the opportunity to call on all political parties to do away with political violence and insults, observing that it is even increasing in internal contest than intra-party contest.
“Our nation Ghana can only be developed, when political players learn to play the game in accordance with the rules that we set for ourselves. There appear to be even danger that all political parties and actors must begin to be concerned about. That is to say that, political violence, political bad language, political insults is gaining much greater grounds in internal contest than it has in the intra-party contest. And it is something that we must all work towards nibbing in the bud”, he said.
“One ugly. Very ugly scene that has characterised the NPP conference that we are observing today is one of the accusations and counter accusations. As for the issue of turning the contest into buying contest, even executives are on radio mentioning amount of money that each contestant is paying the delegates. That is dangerous for our democracy”, he added.
