Former Constituency Secretary for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Tamale South, Mohammed Soawi has given reasons why the party can not unseat the incumbent Member of Parliament for the area, Haruna Iddrisu presently.

Mr. Soawi who was speaking exclusively on Radio Tamale evening political talkshow dubbed – Ashahara Nye Dini on Tuesday’s evening, July 26 revealed that lack of unity among NPP members, and inability of the NPP to provide alternative to for the people to select and leave the MP are their bane.

According to him, the MP who doubles as Minority Leader wouldn’t be a hard nut for them, but aforementioned factors have always been the reasons why NPP failed in previous elections to win the seat.

“Our lack of unity is affecting us (NPP) in the region. Anytime some people lost elections in Tamale South to become executives, they will abandon party works and expect those who won to shoulder everything. And this is impossible for as a party to defeat the MP”, he stated.

“I tried to find a solution to this problem in my days as Constituency Secretary, but i failed because I didn’t get the needed cooperation from the loosen candidates”, he added.

Mohammed Soawi also explained that the constituents need an alternative to the incumbent MP who doubles as Minority Leader, but the NPP has not been able to find a better alternative to dislodge Haruna Iddrisu as MP for Tamale South.

According to him, the NPP as ruling party can not escape the blame that the actions of the Nana Akufo-Addo led government is not contributing to the party’s abysmal performance during elections.

He believed that the opportunity given to the MP to get projects at the expense of the NPP parliamentary candidate during campaign seasons make it difficult for them to work against him.

“The people of Tamale South Constituency need a better alternative to lawyer Haruna. But we are not able to present any candidate who will suit that alternative”, the former NPP Tamale South secretary told the host.

“It is not a secret that Lawyer Haruna is a political giant. And for him to be treated with kid gloves by our own government tells a lot. It looks like the government is over pampering him”, he concluded.

The Tamale South Constituency was created in 2004 and has since been the safest seat for the NDC in the country with many political analysts describing it as “no go area” for the NPP.
