Vice President, Dr. Bahamudu Bawumia has subtly called on delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the party’s next flagbearership contest to vote for people who can do the work and not just because of which religion they belong to.
He made the call at the Islamic NPP’s thanksgiving ceremony at the National Mosque yesterday, July 29 following the celebration of the NPP 30 years anniversary.
“We should never allow religion to divide us. The NPP brings people together. We have fought on issues. We have elected people on merit”, the veep admonished.
According to him, people should be given the mandate based on their vision for the country, reminding the party and Ghanaians to stick to the issues and not make elections a fight.
“We will not make elections a fight about you being a Muslim or you being a Christian. It is about what you can do for the people of Ghana. Your vision and what you can do. So let us stick to the issues”, Dr. Bawumia told the gathering.
The ruling also used the opportunity at the 30th anniversary launch to celebrations to call on party members to unite to propel the party to victory in 2024.
The General Secretary of the party, Justin Frimpong Kodua, said as the party prepared to select parliamentary candidates and a flagbearer, it was important for the party members not to be at each others throat.
The NPP was officially formed on July 28, 1992.
As part of activities marking the 30th anniversary, the party will hold a thanksgiving Islamic prayer at the National Mosque tomorrow, Friday, July 29, 2022, and a Christian thanksgiving service on Sunday, July 30, 2022.
At the occasion were President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the Second Lady, Hajia Samira Bawumia, the Chief of Staff Mrs. Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, Ministers, MPs, Executives and members of the NPP.
