Former Communications Director for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Tamale South Constituency, Alhaji Baba Alhassan has declared his intentions to contest the next parliamentary primaries in the party ahead of the 2024 general elections.
He made the declaration when he appeared on Radio Tamale weekend’s political talkshow dubbed – “Boot 4 Boot” on Yesterday Saturday, July 30.
“Sof, let me tell you that I will be contesting for the NPP parliamentary primaries when nominations are opened. And i am assuring you that i will be the NPP next parliamentary candidate to win the seat for the party for the first time”, he told the host, Fuseini Safianu.
When asked by the host if he was not biting off more than he could chew, looking at the personality as MP for the area presently, the ambitious Baba Alhassan answered, “No!”
According to him, a lot of people believe the Tamale South legislator who doubles as Minority Leader in Ghana’s parliament is untouchable, asking him not to even dream of it.
But he was convinced that nothing is impossible, and that this is the right time for the NPP to take the seat, which they lost in 2004.
“Nothing is impossible. Those who think i don’t have resources to win the seat should know that when our MP won it first, he was not rich. He defeated a whole minister. And that is exactly what i am coming to do”, he said.
“For almost 20 years our MP has not done much to develop the area. Meanwhile, he has had every ‘juicy’ opportunity to serve in government and even in opposition”, he added.
Tamale South Constituency was carved out from the original Gukpegu-Sabonjida constituency in 2004, which was occupied by the late Mustapha Ali on NPP ticket.
And it has remained one of the safest seat for the opposition NDC in the hands of Lawyer Haruna Iddrisu since.
