The General Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP),  Justin Kodua Frimpong has told Ghanaians that it is not true as the party’s Nasara Coordinator, Haruna Futa hinted that the NPP will be presenting a Muslim flagbearer and Christian running mate going into the 2024 elections.

JFK as he is affectionately called was reacting to the comments by the Nasara Coordinator at the NPP Islamic thanksgiving ceremony at the National Mosque following its 30th anniversary this year.

According to the General Secretary, the NPP upcoming presidential primaries to elect candidates for the 2024 general elections will be devoid of partiality.

General Secretary reiterated the commitment of the party to conduct “free and fair” primaries, particularly with the one to elect its new flagbearer.

The party is set to have a new candidate for a presidential election for the first time in 15 years.

““The NPP has come far. The party which was originally called the Northern People’s Party (NPP) has a blend of both Christians and Muslims leading the party in diverse ways. The only position which has never been held by a muslim so far is the flag beareship position. It is my candid view that it is time the NPP show its love by selecting a Muslim to lead the party into election 2024 with a Christian as running mate”, Futa stated.

In his address, the General Secretary Mr. Justin Kodua Frimpong described his colleagues comment as joke.

He said as national leaders, it was wrong to take sides. He added that the party under his leadership will remain neutral and treat all aspirants equally.

“Our Nasara Coordinator was making a jovial statement. But let me reiterate it here that, the national party will bring forth free and fair, transparent elections when  it gets to the presidential primaries”, Justin Frimpong Kodua, JFK rebutted.

“I have said on several platforms that as General Secretary of the party, i will be impartial. I will not take sides. So we urge all national officers. Regional officers. And constituency officers to adhere to that request”, he added.

The stakes are said to be high as Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Minister of Trade and Industry Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen are the bookmakers’ frontrunners.

Already, some of the executives elected during last month’s National Annual Delegates’ Conference at the Accra Sports Stadium have been accused of being in the camp of one or the other.
